Poetry is recognised as a form of expressive art. It is also a form of healing and today, poetry therapy is recognised as an effective treatment for people in mental and emotional distress. Some of the therapeutic benefits of writing poetry are:
- It allows us to heal through emotional expression
- It creates connections – shared poetry moves others & strengthens relationships
- It strengthens language, writing & speaking skills
I am very grateful for the gift of poetry that has helped me express feelings of sadness, loss & rage that may otherwise have remained with me with no means of escape or relief. Writing and performing poetry has also given me a platform to share experiences of love, spirituality and awareness that I hope has resonated (and will continue to do so) in a meaningful & positive way with other people.
